Psychopaths & CEO’s – What do they have in common?

It’s somewhat alarming to think there is an overlap in the traits exhibited by CEO’s and Psychopaths, but it is true! Perhaps not shocking news for those of you who have worked with high level leaders. In a study released by Cangemi & Pfohl, “Sociopaths in High Places,” psychopathic traits were identified in top executives and CEO’s. Also, according to Forbes magazine, the incidence of psychopathic traits are four times more likely to occur in the business world than the general public. Psychopaths exhibit glibness, manipulation, lack of emotion (especially guilt), impulsiveness, aggression and can be irresponsible.

On some level, the overlap between the two groups makes sense, given that it takes some of these kinds of factors to succeed in competitive markets. Often, these ‘psychopathic’ type of leaders are risk takers, opportunistic, succeed at the expense of others, and have little concern for how their actions impact those around them. So, it really begs the question as to what sets a successful leader who is able to excel in competitive markets without having a negative impact on others apart from a leader who ‘succeeds’ at the expense of those around them.

In “Good to Great,” Collins argues that a “Level Five Leader’ possesses the duality of modest and willful, as well as humble and fearless. Additionally, being a leader who seeks feedback from others demonstrates humility and wisdom. It is these kind of intangible values that provide protection against reaping destruction when trying to succeed. Thinking of the impact you have on others and working towards business decisions that are a win-win for all parties ensures fairness and success for all involved. Everybody likes a win-win and it makes a whole of business sense, too!
