Do You Have Executive Presence?
Leaders exude confidence! The visual dynamic of this is called, Executive Presence. Executive Presence is more easily observed that defined. You will sense it before you define it by the fact that you notice someone who has it and are drawn to them. What you will see: Someone with Executive Presence exudes confidence, speaks well with proper grammar, enunciation, diction, and pacing. They dress well and carry themselves well with correct posture. They are socially appropriate and are often fluid at social gatherings when introducing themselves and others. If a meal is served, they demonstrate appropriate etiquette and table manners.
Personally, I would choose comfort over style most days. I have never been drawn to high heels and dresses. When I’m at home, I prefer sweat pants and t-shirts. After hearing about Executive Presence and the importance of what to wear in terms of how other people may view you, I worked at dressing more professionally. It’s amazing how people treat you differently when you are dressed more professionally. They assume you have leadership and authority. So, for a ‘take away,’ think of examples of people you have noticed at various events that exemplify Executive Presence. What stands out about them? What is one way you can improve your Executive Presence? It may be superficial on one level, but it does communicate leadership, status and authority to those around you. And, if you have something to say, and I suspect you do, other people will be a lot more likely to listen! What are changes you can make to improve your executive presence today? I’d love to hear your ideas so you can share them with others…
